小簡介

Damien Rice 來自愛爾蘭，出生於七十年代早期，繪畫與寫歌是他青年時期的興趣，也因此讓他有了組團的念頭，在”O”的專輯內頁有些插畫便是 Damien Rice 自己的作品。在 1997 年他組了一個名為 Juniper 的團，前後發行了三張 EP，”The World Is Dead” 和 “Weathermen” 這兩首單曲也成為電台熱門歌曲，但因為合約問題無法錄製完整的專輯，於是在 99 年 Damien Rice 離開樂團前往 Tuscany，並從此在歐洲流浪了一年，之後又回到了都柏林，想辦法籌錢錄了一張 Demo，寄給了製作人兼電影配樂家的 David Arnold，Arnold 很喜歡他的 Demo，於是便安排 Damien Rice 在他的錄音室錄了第一張 EP — “The Blower’s Daughter”，在 2001 年發行後這張 EP 登上了排行榜前 20 名，也促成了接下來 “O” 這張專輯的發表，果不其然，”O” 在 2002 年發表以後立刻獲得廣大的好評，除了舉行了六周的巡迴演出之外，也出現在許多樂評的年終投票名單上。(以上數據參考 AMG 與其它網路數據)
愛爾蘭總是盛產音樂詩人的國度，在其創作歌手Damien Rice發行於2003年的首張個人樂隊專輯《0》中，封面是一片米白，兩個小小的手繪人像，默默的宣示這是張簡單的民謠專輯，Damien Rice出生於70年代早期，以搖滾風格開始音樂之路，但在這張專輯裡面你實在聽不出來，大量的空心吉它和弦,輕鬆打擊樂器低調而簡約的伴奏，間或有一些 華麗悲傷弦樂來烘托氣氛，沒有多餘的花俏來轉移焦點，只為呈現Damien Rice 那充份蘊含情感的歌聲，一起構成了一個親密卻傷感的空間，精緻而乾淨。
這張專輯的成功，除了 Damien Rice 充滿真摯的歌聲外，女聲歌者 lisa hannigan 與大提琴手 vyvienne long 也功不可沒，lisa 的歌聲非常地動聽，在專輯裡時而主唱時而合音，與 Damien Rice 搭配地極佳，也讓整張專輯聽來更為完整而動人。而 vyvienne 每一下都好像直接拉在心房上的大提琴，更是完全襯托出這兩位歌者那直接而真誠的歌聲。
Damien Rice聲音的渲染力，甚至可以將歌曲的情緒化為實質，然後直接傳到聽者的心上，他對樂器的感覺和協調性也非常出色, 可能是他小時候學過畫的緣故，除了專輯封面和內頁的插圖出自他手之外，在他的吟唱之下,那些背景音樂彷彿組成了一幅異常美麗的圖畫，這一點在第六首 《Amie》中表現到了極致.當然專輯中的《Cheers Darling》《The Blower”s Daughter》《 Cold Water 》《Volcano》等其他歌曲，不誇張的講，都是讓人一聽就瘋狂為之吸引的養耳歌曲，特別一提的是《The Blower”s Daughter》《 Cold Water 》被美國電影《CLOSER》（中文譯名《偷心》）收錄為其片頭結尾插曲，對於《The Blower”s Daughter》來說，之前已被美國熱映電視劇《THE L WORD》第一季結尾處作為整季SHOW的終曲，可見是首多麼打動人心的作品了。此外，《Delicate》亦被熱門美劇《LOST》season1 收錄為其中一首插曲。

Irish singer/songwriter Damien Rice launched his music career in the late-’90s with the hard-hitting indie rock outfit Juniper. The group signed to Polygram in 1997 and released two singles, “The World Is Dead” and “Weathermen,” which did moderately well on Irish radio, but when it came time to record a full-length album, contractual rules from the label prevented Juniper from doing so, and Rice split. After a brief respite in Europe, Rice returned to Dublin to focus on music once again, scrounging up enough money to record a demo. He sent it to producer/film composer David Arnold (Björk, Nina Persson, Paul Oakenfold), and luckily for him, Arnold loved it and set Rice up in his very own mobile studio to make a record. His first single, “The Blower’s Daughter,” was an instant Top 20 hit when it appeared in fall 2001. Shared gigs with McAlmont & Butler and folkie Kathryn Williams followed in summer 2002 when Rice released O in the U.K. The album hit the States in 2003, which earned the Irishman a dedicated group of American fans in addition to his European ones, and after satiating all of them with a collection of B-sides in 2005, Rice released his sophomore record, 9.
